Government Support for Renewable Heating

Grants as a contribution to well-designed systems — not as the primary reason to install one.

Design first. Grant second.

Government incentives can help offset a portion of the upfront cost of renewable heating systems. These schemes are designed to encourage the adoption of low-carbon technologies, but they do not remove the need for careful system design or suitability assessment. Our approach is to treat grants as a contribution, not a driver. Systems are specified to perform correctly for the building first, with grant eligibility considered alongside — not instead of — sound engineering.

💷

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides a capital grant towards the installation of eligible air source and ground source heat pump systems in domestic properties in England and Wales.

Where applicable, we manage the grant process as part of the overall project delivery, including compliance with MCS requirements and submission of the necessary documentation following commissioning. Grant values and eligibility criteria are set by government and may change over time.

Current grant values (subject to change):
Air Source Heat Pump — up to £7,500
Ground Source Heat Pump — up to £7,500
Always confirm current values at gov.uk

As an MCS-certified installer (NIC-3616), we are able to submit BUS voucher applications on your behalf following commissioning.

Eligibility Considerations

Eligibility for grant support depends on several factors. Not all properties or projects will qualify, and grant eligibility alone does not determine whether a heat pump solution is appropriate.

Property Requirements

  • Property type and location (England & Wales)
  • Existing heating system being replaced
  • Sufficient insulation levels and EPC rating
  • No existing renewable heating system

System Requirements

  • MCS-certified installation
  • System design meets heat demand calculations
  • Compliance with Building Regulations
  • Installer must hold valid MCS certification
⚖️

Design First, Grant Second

In some cases, pursuing grant eligibility can impose constraints on system design. Where these constraints conflict with performance, longevity or suitability, we will always prioritise the correct technical solution for the building.

Our role is to explain the trade-offs clearly so that informed decisions can be made. A grant-eligible system that underperforms is not a good outcome. A well-designed system that happens to qualify for a grant is.

Our commitment: We will always advise honestly about grant eligibility, including when we believe a different approach would better serve the building — even if that means forgoing available grant funding.

Future Funding & Policy Changes

Government policy and funding mechanisms continue to evolve as the UK transitions toward lower-carbon heating. We monitor changes in grant structures, regulations and lending frameworks to ensure advice remains current and practical.

Where new schemes become available, we assess how they align with real-world performance and project delivery rather than theoretical benefit alone. The best time to discuss funding options is at the start of a project, before design decisions have been made.

  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) — current primary grant mechanism
  • ECO4 and Great British Insulation Scheme — for eligible households
  • Local authority and regional funding schemes
  • Green finance and heat pump loans
