MCS Certified

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is more than a badge displayed on an installer's website. It is the recognised UK quality mark for small-scale renewable-energy systems and sets standards for both eligible products and the businesses that install them. These standards cover areas including system design, product selection, installation, commissioning, documentation and customer handover.

MCS certification is technology-specific. A company certified for solar PV, for example, is not automatically certified to contract for a heat-pump installation. Before accepting a quotation, check that the business named on the contract is listed on the MCS register for the technology being installed.

Why choose an MCS-certified installer?

MCS certification is important because:

• An eligible heat pump must be installed and commissioned by a suitably certified MCS business to receive Boiler Upgrade Scheme funding.
• Many energy suppliers request an MCS certificate when setting up smart tariffs for electricity exported from solar panels.
• It confirms that the installation has been designed, installed, commissioned and documented against recognised industry standards.
• It provides a clear record of the installation, which may be requested when applying for funding, arranging an export tariff or selling the property.
• MCS-certified businesses working with domestic customers must follow an approved consumer-protection framework, providing a recognised route for escalating an unresolved complaint.
